Interview with a Paranormal Investigator
Rhonda Schienle is the Founder of Indiana Paranormal Investigators Inc., a not for profit organization with a dedicated volunteer team that investigates, researches and documents paranormal activities. Trained as a nurse, Rhonda also has a Bachelor of Science degree in Metaphysics and a Master of Science degree in Holistic Ministries.
What is a Paranormal Investigator?
MD: "Can you define what a paranormal investigator does in his or her work?"
RS: "Paranormal Investigators are commonly known as ghost hunters. These labels are vague and impersonal and don’t really convey the real story behind my work. Ghosts and spirits were, at one time, living and breathing human beings who had lives, families and, perhaps, even stories to tell. I want to know why they are still here on earth and whether they are trying to convey messages to loved ones."

Paranormal Experiences and Psychic Power
Mary's article deals directly with several types of triggers that bring about psychic power, including child abuse and near death experiences. It's an unfortunate comment that I've experienced many of these triggers. As a child I experienced various forms of ongoing abuse and trauma. As an adult I experienced a near death experience as a reaction to chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. As Mary states, many instances of trauma have opened people up to psychic experiences. I am no different in that regard.
Trauma experienced during child abuse often is a catalyst for psychic abilities. An estimated 30-50 percent of psychics have reported incidents of childhood abuse and 75 percent have experienced a form of trauma in their lives. Children experiencing violence and abuse often protect themselves by dissociating their bodies from their consciousness of pain; they do this by entering a “trauma trance,” an altered state of awareness. Adrenalin pushes them into an “out of body” survival mode that often opens the third eye.
I had several paranormal experiences as a child. One occurred within a couple days of my step-grandfather dying. We were very close and used to do many things together, including the day he died. He wanted me to go to the horse races that fateful day, which was a common occurrence, but my stepmother's decision to send me to school instead probably spared me from witnessing his death directly. A couple of days after his death I had an out of body experience. The most memorable part of this was the realization that I was on the ceiling and seeing my little 11 year old body sleeping on the bed. The thoughts that went through my mind included wondering how this happened, and more importantly at that moment, how would I get back into my body (hint: head first worked). While this experience didn't include my step-grandfather, the timing of his death and this experience is something I've always associated and fits my view of Mary's altered state trauma. I had a couple more brief interactions with my step-grandfather after his death, including a phone call.
My original career choice was in nursing, where I spent about 15 years working in hospitals and medical offices. With a few years of overlap, the last 15 years or so have moved me towards an eastern medicine philosophy. I have owned my own massage business and taught massage courses, as well. Later, I earned a BS in Metaphysics and an MS in Holistic Ministries and worked towards integrating mind, body and spirit as a Holistic Life Coach.
More recently, in 2007 and 2008, I went through chemotherapy and radiation therapy as a breast cancer patient. Early into the chemotherapy treatment I had a bad reaction to a steroid given to me to help relieve nausea. I spent several days in the hospital, nearly died at one point, and took a strong heart medication for the following year to correct the issues the steroid created in my system. Mary's article covers this incident with this portion of her article:
One enters an altered state of consciousness; events become heightened in the mind and one gets a slow-motion recording of the experience in the brain. Simultaneously, the mind registers a form of detachment allowing it to watch without emotion as though the event were happening to someone else. The altered state is the body’s way of coping with the trauma; it provides one with a kind of alertness, edge, hypersensitivity that enables him to survive the danger.
In my case, my perception of what happened during the several minutes where my heart was seizing and the Doctors and nurses were surrounding me differs quite a bit from what my husband witnessed. We have differing stories of what occurred during those minutes, my version of me being very animated and talkative, his version of me being very nervous and barely responding as emergency procedures and injections were taking place. While this alone does not indicate a paranormal experience, there are subsequent issues in my life that began to take place shortly after this incident.
These incidents and several others in my life have become the starting point of my venture into paranormal investigations and the creation of Indiana Paranormal Investigators.

A Breast Cancer Survivor thanks Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson
A Breast Cancer survivor says "Thank You".
I have a 20-year medical and holistic studies background, with a Bachelors of Science in Metaphysics and a Masters Degree in Holistic Ministries. I also wrote and taught a 500-hour massage therapy program. I share all of this for two reasons.
First, my occupational and educational background did not fully prepare me for the day I was told that I had Breast Cancer. That was August of 2007. And here I am.
Second, even though having a medical background did not prepare me in hearing the words, “breast cancer”, it did help me in ways that were integral to my survival.
In my medical background and also with teaching massage therapy, I learned a great deal in energy work, in particular, other people’s emotional exchange when practicing massage therapy. This included how to do what is called “grounding” before working with a client.
I also understood very well how anger, fear and other emotions could release various hormones in the bloodstream. Some refer to them as the “flight or fight” response hormones. We need this to react and respond.
Doctors I worked for, including my own personal Doctors, would share what types of chemicals can be released in the body that could breakdown the immune system and so forth if anger, fear and danger are being experienced for a prolonged period of time.
This is what I kept in mind. I was so fearful of my diagnosis and did not know what was going to happen to me. I needed to learn to control my fear. I thought this was going to be a long ride in treatment, which it was.
After my first round of Chemo and some very strong medication for the nausea (steroids) I was rushed to the emergency room on a Friday night. I had an allergic reaction to this steroid that was very bad. My body was exhausted and months prior to even being diagnosed I had stopped sleeping. I was beyond fatigued and exhausted.
They gave me this same medicine again on Sunday. I believed at this moment it was not the cancer that was going to kill me, but the medication. I had every Doctor and nurse surrounding me. My husband was in the room as he witnessed this whole horrific ordeal. I knew I was leaving this earth. I had and still have related experiences to this day from this almost near death experience.
A few days after I went home, my hair began to fall out and I was very, very weak, sick and vulnerable. I was also frightened and scared.
My husband fed me, took care of me and turned on my TV to programs to help me keep my mind off of the obvious. For the first time, I began watching some show about ghost hunters. I was very intrigued because it relates to many of my own personal experiences and also to my educational and occupational studies.
I was fascinated the most with respect to the parallel of how not to react to an entity with regards to fear and anger as I understood how not to have prolonged anger and fear for the medical reasons I stated earlier.
Grant Wilson and Jason Hawes, sharing how not to show any fear or these types of emotions to any entity was a Godsend of a message to me.
It was not but a few days after watching that episode that I had my first encounter with a shadow figure. It was with a tall man leaning over my bed. He appeared to me very tall and thin. Later I learned from someone in the paranormal field, it was someone equivalent to the undertaker. This person also had paranormal experiences with their near death.
I am convinced that I watched the Ghost hunters show with Grant and Jason this one particular evening the shadow man came to my bed. I looked at him and said I am not dealing with this now because I am going to go back to sleep and rolled over. I was calm as could be and did not show any fear or anger, just as I had seen earlier in the show.
Some could say this was meds, being tired, chemo, etc., but I know for sure what happened to me. It is two years later, no chemo, lots of rest and I still have personal paranormal experiences. I have had people tell me that I am an “energy intuitive”, likely due to the near death trauma experience in the hospital.
This letter was to say thank you so much Grant and Jason. It was almost exactly a year after treatment that I had a dream that you visited me in Chicago. I had won some contest and you both were sitting on my couch and I ran to you both thanking you. It was one of those dreams that was very real and detailed.
Bright Blessings and Thank You.

Welcome!
Our team would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year in 2010. May you all be with good health, joy and happiness.
There is so much going on in our field each and every day with respect to new paranormal gear and information. We hear a lot about new devices or new techniques in deciphering if there is paranormal activity or anomalies. Thanks to all of the new shows on TV that inform and intrigue us about the paranormal. We find it very helpful when we talk to clients or potential clients, they seem to relate to an experience to one of the shows they have seen.
Happy Hauntings!
